Glossary

The glossary of useful words and phrases to know is being compiled.

Here are a few essential concepts for the understanding of Kriya Yoga practice:

Yamas - Moral restraints, the 5 behaviours a truth student should avoid preferably by cultivating their opposite

Niyamas - the 5 moral observances that a student should cultivate

Asana - posture

Pranayma - control of life force, also refers to the many forms of breathe control used in yoga such as alternate nostril breating, bellows breathe and Kriya Pranayama.

Concentration - when attention is focussed towards an object or concept for the purpose of bringing the awareness to a single point.

Meditation - true meditation is when ones attention is absorbed in the object of concentration. What is generally thought of as meditation is the practice of trying to achieve this state.

Samadhi - Oneness, when the meditator is totally indentified with the object of concentration to such a degree that the meditator has no awareness of anything else, they are literally one with that object, this is known as sabikalpa samadhi, oneness with support. Nirbikalpa samadhi is when the attention is removed from the object of concentration and the student experiences a state of pure being, the oneness of all existence without any sense of being separate from it. This is oneness without support.

Ayurveda - Ayur means life, veda means knowledge or wisdom. Ayurveda means 'life knowledge'. It is a wholistic system of living in accordance with the laws and rythmns of nature and life that takes each individuals mind-body constitution into account and gives specific guidelines for diet, exercise, diagnosis and remedy. A basic knowledge of the principles of Ayurveda will be a great aid to spiritual practice.

Guru - 'Gu' means darkness, 'ru' means light, guru means the light (of knowledge) which destroys the darkness (of ignorance). In Indian society the word guru is used to describe a teacher of any subject, not just spirituality. Just because a teacher has the title of guru it does not meant that they are an enlightened being of infinite wisdom.
